About JShort

Welcome to JShort Ceramics,

where artistry meets sustainability in the heart of Columbus, OH. Established in September 2023, JShort Ceramics evolved into a small business venture, operating from the cozy confines of my home studio.

My journey in ceramics began with a simple love for bonsai trees and a desire to craft my own pots for my current collection. I spent months hand-building pots that sparked an overall interest in all types of functional pottery which has lately been my primary focus. Driven by a deep passion for ceramics and a love for creating with my hands, I am committed to craftsmanship in every vessel I create.

My Color Palette Inspiration

Drawing inspiration from the untamed beauty of nature, each piece in my collection embodies earthy tones and rich accents. I aim to infuse that natural magic into every ceramic creation.

I currently gravitate towards Mayco and Amaco glazes for their stunning effects, but I am eager to experiment with a variety of materials and glazes in the future! This will include mason stains, underglazes, and other techniques that I haven't tried yet as well.

Crafting Stories, One Piece at a Time

I have currently structured my products into three main categories: kitchenware, bonsai and planter pots, and vessels for home decor.

Every piece that I create is a labor-intensive journey, and I'm in love with each and every detail-oriented task. The result is not just a product but a piece of art that carries the energy of the entire process of its creation. From my home to yours, it's a journey of around 4-8 weeks for a piece to evolve into its unique, tangible form.

Environment & Sustainability - "Imperfect Items"

Knowing that the ceramics industry isn't helpful to the environment, I strive to minimize waste by repurposing materials such as; clay, tools, and water in my daily routine. I choose to only fire my kiln when I have a "full load", and your products may be even be shipped in a recycled box from a previous purchase of mine!

I also choose to embrace imperfection as part of the artistic journey by offering "imperfect" items at discounted rates. There are many variables that could cause defects in an object that simply aren't always controllable. Items that would otherwise be smashed and labeled as a loss cause, are intended to represent my own personal growth and evolution within the ceramics industry.

Shipping & Receiving

Orders may take up to 5-7 days to process. Once shipped, you will receive an emailed confirmation notification that will include your tracking number. Your package should then arrive within 3-7 days. This small business owner appreciates your patience and understanding during this time. :-)

Care Instructions for your Handmade Pottery

While my mid-fired products are vitrified and considered dishwasher-safe, it is best to hand wash any and all handmade ceramic items when possible to preserve the longevity of the item. Hand washing is even more important for those items that have texture or intricate designs.

For items with low-fire glazes, it's best to keep them dry, in a room-temperature environment, and will not be labeled as food-safe. This is due to bacteria that could form in cracks or areas where bare clay is present. Low fire glazes do not always turn glaze into glass and could absorb liquids if left to sit out.

If you purchase an "imperfect" item, please note that they are still vitrified and food-safe as long as they do not pertain low fire glazes. All imperfect items will still require you to inspect the product regularly for changes in the defect and are prone to a shorter lifespan. Purchase at your own risk, but do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns over time with your item.

JShort Fan Favorites

Mugs are the foundation in most handmade ceramic businesses, and mine is no different! Not only are they great conversation starters, but they offer a variety of utility functions and can be an affordable and thoughtful gift! Many ceramic artists grow a rather large mug collection themselves, as it is a universal item that is present in many cultures around the world.

Future Limited Editions & Special Releases

This year, I'm excited to explore new techniques and designs, which will offer limited editions and special releases that showcase my evolving style as a ceramicist. Don't miss out on these unique pieces!

More than Pottery, It's Connection

For me, ceramics is more than just an art form; it's a means of connection and self-expression. The opportunity to meet new people and continue to inspire and be inspired by those people.

I invite you to explore my online store and join me on this creative journey. To view my representation of the boundless wonders of the outdoors through my own lens.

Your support means the world to me!

Warm Regards,

JShort
